Green Mountain Tournament 06-07 (Girls)

Girl's Hockey at its Best

This January 6th and 7th the Nelson Withington Skating Facility was alive with a youth hockey tournament sponsored by the Brattleboro Hockey Association. Over 75 players on U14 girl's teams were playing in the 15th annual Green Mountain Tournament and the letter below is addressed to BHA Brattleboro Coach, Phil Rollins from the Kearsarge U14 Girl's team.

Phil,
Thank you for inviting our team to play in your tournament. Our girls
have had few wins and many losses over the past three years so they
were absolutely thrilled with the success they had this weekend. They all
had a fun and memorable experience. Please congratulate your team for
their outstanding effort. All your girls are well disciplined, have
excellent skills and tremendous heart which is a credit to them and your
coaching. What a game, double OT it doesn't get any better than that. You did a
great job with team selection. There were many close and exciting
games and every team had a legitimate chance to win. Thank you again and
please pass on a word of thanks to the tournament director and everyone
one involved in BYHA. The tournament was well run and had a friendly
and fun atmosphere. Well Done!

Stay tuned next season as the tournament will be a Girl's tournament traditionally the 1st weekend of January - 5th and 6th of 2008.

Withington Cup - 2007

The annual playing of the Withington Cup was the culmination of Brattleboro's Winter Carnival Sunday night, February 25. Normally played by the Bantams, the cup this year featured the Peewee team, as BHA did not field a Bantam team during the season. The Brattleboro Peewees guests were the Hartford, Vermont Hurricanes. The two teams knew each other well by game day, having played three previous matches at the Hartford rink in which Brattleboro seemed on the verge of winning more than once, but each time Hartford outlasted the Hawks and pulled out a victory. Finally playing on home ice, and with the benefit of several players who had been absent on other occasions, Brattleboro had reason for optimism this time, though tempered with respect for a worthy opponent.

The first period saw Brattleboro dominate the action, spending the majority of the time in Hartford's end, though the visitors' tenacious defense prevented any penetration close to the goal. Center Adam Griffin wove his way repeatedly toward the objective, only to be stopped, until finally he broke through and scored the first goal of the game, putting Brattleboro ahead 1-0 at the end of the first period.

During the second period Hartford found its game and, led by the swift-footed #10 Galen Moynihan, fired several shots on Brattleboro goalie Hunter Neilson. Brattleboro's Peewee team is unusual in its mix of veteran skaters and new players who did not come up through the ranks of the Mites and Squirts. These new players literally made this year's Peewee team possible by raising the roster to a sufficient number of skaters. During the season the newcomers, who began by learning to ice skate in September, have matured into real puck carriers, goal scorers, and defensemen. Hartford took advantage of the new line, however, and several times hammered away at close range at goalie Neilson, who was able to plug all the holes until relief came from the substitution of the veterans. Ironically, the only Hartford goal came during the second period when the puck was sent slowly all alone into the Brattleboro end, and Neilson inadvertently deflected it into the net, tying the score - a goalie's worst nightmare. Brattleboro soon mounted an attack with the forward line of Adam Griffin, Senou Lynn, and Romello Lindsey. A Griffin slapshot from the outside generated a rebound to be tipped in by Lynn. Brattleboro was again ahead by a goal with one period to go.

In previous games Brattleboro has led Hartford by a goal going into the final period, only to submit to a determined Hurricane onslaught in the final minutes. The team was acutely aware of the danger of a repeat of games gone by. True to its habit, the Hartford team attacked relentlessly and the game became a defensive battle. Brattleboro was penalized twice, and both times the game was saved by the forward line consisting of Emily Wilson, Magda Blakeson, and Patric Chandler. These three were able to clear the puck from the Brattleboro zone, so that Hartford found themselves on defense when trying to take advantage of their power plays. The defensive line, staffed by Philip Perkins, Molly Smith, Maddie Rollins, and Logan Turner-Renaud, battled heroically, diving across the ice when necessary to stop a Hartford pass to the inside or a breakaway. With a minute and a half to go Hartford ratcheted up the pressure by pulling its goalie in order to deploy six skaters to pound the home team. Coach Lillie responded by putting in a special squad, and the Hurricanes found themselves scrambling to protect their open net as Brattleboro came charging back. In the end the clock ran out on Hartford, and for the first time this season the Brattleboro Peewees found themselves the victors over the Hurricanes. Lynn remarked that "Hartford is the best team we've beaten". The Hartford coach told his Brattleboro counterpart that it was the most fun they had had in a game this year.

Though it is just a single game, the Withington Cup benefits from the trappings of a tournament. Medals were awarded to both teams, and Hunter Neilson, as the winning goalie, led his team on a victory lap with the heavy trophy. The Brattleboro Peewees, who despaired of even having a team at the beginning of the season, enjoyed the validation of winning a tough game over a good team in front of a Winter Carnival home crowd.
